Vic: Union praises officers who led police murder probe

MELBOURNE, Dec 31 AAP - Many police investigating the murders of Sergeant Gary Silkand Senior Constable Rod Miller gave up promotion opportunities to track down the killers, the Victoria Police Association said.

Association secretary Paul Mullett said the investigation had been a painstaking one.

"A lot of members associated with the taskforce have sacrificed their own personalcareers to make sure those who committed these crimes were bought to justice and triedand committed," Sen Sgt Mullett said.

"They've forgone promotions and put their lives on hold to dedicate themselves to thetask of investigating and solving this violent crime."

Bandali Michael Debs, 49, and Jason Joseph Roberts, 22, were today found guilty ofthe murders of Sergeant Gary Silk, 35, and Senior Constable Rod Miller, 34 on August 16,1998.

Sen Sgt Mullett praised prosecuting lawyers who he said had remained stoic throughoutthe marathon investigation and trial.

Officers involved in the investigation would undergo a debriefing process before preparingsubmissions to the public prosecutor for the sentencing of the two murderers, Sen SgtMullett said.

"Today's verdict draws a line in the sand in terms of the investigation. It puts totalclosure to the unfortunate incident which happened four years ago," he said.

"The question is: will there be total closure for them (the families) and for closecolleagues of the two members?"
